Do I run run FreeBSD?
yes

Has my FreeBSD box ever been invected with the sub 7 or melissa virus?
no

Has my grandmothers box ever been infected with the sub 7 or melissa virus?
yes

Will my grandmother probably use windows XP?
yes

You are right though, if ISP's and buisnesses properly filtered packets leaving the network we would't have to worry about this anyway. I don't think this is Microsofts job, I just thought you should hit all the points.
