Beware the Kindness of Strangers: The Case Against Good Samaritan Hackers
Richard Forno, 2002-03-28

The Good Samaritan defence, invoked by hackers like Adrian Lamo, can too easily be distorted by those with less altruistic intentions.

All,
I can't agree. I am a Security Engineer for an Atlanta-based security firm, and have done many, many pen. tests, audits, and network security runs. I have to say that if I went about and did some 'good samaritan hacking' on my own, I'd consider myself on the wrong side of the law. The analogy of someone walking through my house is a valid one. I wouldn't want anyone rummaging through my network, or those I protect, and if something like that happens that person(s) is/are considered to be illegal intruders - no matter how 'good' their intentions are. If you want to learn how to hack, set up a baby network for yourself at home, if you want to go to jail, come knock on one of the virtual doors I protect - I'll make sure you do jail time.
