Beware the Kindness of Strangers: The Case Against Good Samaritan Hackers
Richard Forno, 2002-03-28

The Good Samaritan defence, invoked by hackers like Adrian Lamo, can too easily be distorted by those with less altruistic intentions.

wait...wait...WAIT...does anyone still understand the concept of "Imminent domain?" Last I checked that means that if it is not expressly YOURS, it does NOT belong to you...and you shouldn't be poking around. If I walked into a bank I use (not MY bank), and I see the vault open, I walk over to the security guard and tell him/her of the problem. I DO NOT sneak into the vault, count the money, pull on each safety deposit box to see if it opens, and then run out and say "Look, you're vulnerable to an attack"...that's bs. Listen - hacker ethic is an oxymoron, we all know that. I'd consider myself a gray-hat, and if I happen to wander on the dark side, I will expect to have someone knock no my door and take me away. I have a SIGNED contract, notarized and all (thanks "Patriot Bill"..grrr) since it's considered terrorism to invade even network space - before I even begin to think of starting a pen test. Sorry to be so long-winded, but this issue makes me kind of upset.....I work security for a living, I have to play by the rules, why wouln't some 13 y/o kid with a copy of ProxyHunter?
...cheers! The SekurityWizard (at hushmail.com)
