A Mickey Mouse Bill
David Banisar, 2002-04-01

The Hollings copyright bill would shoehorn absurd copy-blocking technology into everything from your Palm Pilot to your digital camera. Is this progress?

I drive a hot-rod. Although the official details list the car as being made in 1966 the only original part of the car that remains is the roof; all the other metal, chassis, engine and such having been replaced in the name of restoration. I am also exempt from emissions regulations, here in the UK from having to use the regulation license plates, from seat belt laws, etc etc. So what I have is a car that is actually 3 years old with a brand new engine that can keep up with the best of today's metal - but in the eyes of the government if quite legally a classic car.

What's the point to all of this rambling? Well, if this law does come into effect and is supported across the globe I'll retain my pre-big brother PC and upgrade it where necessary. I'll trade "illegal" Linux patches to enable me to bypass this rubish. I'll sit and analyse their proprietary protocols and reverse engineer them. And write more patches.

In short - I'll play them at their own game. Can't buy a PC not Authorised: I'll upgrade my current one. Can't install Windoze without Copyright Security - well then I wont. And are they going to stop me? Anything more is just thought-crime.
