Have you ever been to docs.sun.com? It's quite the site. Everything is documented. Everything is open. One can hardly find this depth of documentation from Intel, nVidia, or other manufacturers, unless it serves their purpose. It's just not part of their culture. It's not a part of IBM's culture either. Running a Linux kernel on a mainframe REQUIRES non-open source drivers.
I've been around for a while-- I think we need to revisit the idea of "open computing", which many people who are out there today have never really thought about. It isn't the same as "open source", but it can have some of the same benefits.
