"... pacemakers ... subject to outages and interruptions because in the future they're controlled via Internet," and "the power grid could fail catastrophically by 2005!" Come now -- only an idiot would design a pacemaker to be controlled via the Internet. Monitored, yes; controlled; not on your life! And the power grid could indeed fail, catastrophically, perhaps next week, most likely because of the severe heat wave the U.S. is experiencing combined with widespread incompetence among today's generation of maintenance personnel. No viruses or worms needed.
Perspective, my friend, perspective and judgement. They are sorely needed in times like these. Not hysteria.
