I am a Vietnamese American and frankly, I never saw in Tim Mullen's account any hint of the mockery or disrespect that you describe. Tim Mullen is a very straightforward person and if he wanted to disrespectful, mocking or caustic, you wouldn't need to read between the lines or guess at his meaning....
