"Spyware" isn't harmless software when it starts hijacking your browser, downloading updates, and displaying adult porn images to small children.

Q: Why spyware exist?
A: Because someone was convinced that by using it they could make money.

If we can make this answer not true then spyware should go away on its own, as there would be no point to creating it. We need to find a way to convince everybody that there is no money in spyware.
