Most OSes do not allow for spaces in passwords. I don't know of many *NIX environments that do. However, Darwin and OS X do allow for spaces.

I have also found that for my passwords, using the first or last letter of every word in a sentance makes for a very strong and difficult to crack password. Simply add special characters at the beginning or end, and ensure the sentence includes a number somewhere and you're goo to go.
