i think this article is helpful in explaining the different technologies keyloggers use. I simply want to add a postscript to the paragraphn about kernel level keyloggers, who are probably the mostb difficult to detect. There is a new product called KeyScrambler that encrypts keystrokes at the kernel level and is below all of the keylogging software. It then decrypts within the browser itself, so that any keyloggers will only record indecipherable, encrypted keys. This method works against known and unknown keyloggers and can protect more than just the user's login information. It's available free at qfxsoftware.com.
