The CIO ?!?! 2006-03-08

And what the hell is happening to academic freedom when a researcher can get a perfectly legitimate experiment terminated because the "CIO requested it be ended prematurely"?!?

I have a friend who used to work at a university IT department. He eventually quit because of the (newly established) CIO role, which was totally ruining their IT infrastructure. By giving the job a corporate sounding name and role, it attracted wannabee corporate types who tried to run the infrastructure in the same way as a corporation -- which was totally inappropriate for a university.

To make matters worse, people usually apply for a (low paid) CIO role in a university rather than, say, a Fortune 500 company, because they don't have the skills to actually cut it in the corporate world. In other words, they are mostly also of doubtful competence. The best thing most universities could do is simply abolish the role.
