The threat landscape has changed a bit since DARPA and big universities constituted the lion's share of participants on what we now call the Internet. Your sentiments are dated, but the cultural impetus for the gripe is understood (where would we be today without that mentality?). Nevertheless, the university culture contributes to the current security problems on the Internet (certainly not solely), and if you care to maintain your "freedon" from risk management, the new reality, you might invest your energy in supporting more thoughtful security tests. On the new Internet with its diverse stakeholders, you'd be well-served to dissect "perfectly ligitimate experiments", should you aspirations include moving from acedemia to the private sector. And if you can't take this heat, you probably deserved to get terminated.
