Telecos under fire for helping NSA wiretaps 2006-05-15

Being the idealistic individual that I am, I called Verizon customer service.

I asked if my phone records were among those that were given to the NSA.

I was put on hold for a few minutes, and when the customer service rep came back she dais, "We have no way of determining if your specific phone records were provided to the NSA."

I then requested full refund for the last five years of service with Verizon Wireless.

The customer service rep was not responding, so I continued. "The news reports I've seen indicate that the records involved may go as far back as 2001. If Verizon provided my records to the NSA without a warrant, then they were in violation of the terms of my service agreement. Therefore, I was maying service fees in good faith, while Verizon was in violation of the terms of service. I want a full refund for the period during which Verizon was in violation of the terms of service."

the customer service rep replied, "You can speak to your lawyer and have him contact our legal department on that matter. Is there anything else I can do to help you?"

To be fair, she was polite and professional on the phone, so I decided not to harass her. I said, "Just please record that I'm be getting together with some friends and pooling our resources on this matter, and that I'll be encouraging my family and friends to seek a similar refund."

On the the meat of this post.

I'd like to encourage anyone reading this who has an account with Verizon, AT&T or BellSouth to call their customer service center and make the same request.

Ask for a full refund. Feel free to use whatever logic applies.

If you're thinking of changing providers than do so, and make it clear that you will NOT be paying an early termination fee. The service provider is the one in violation of the terms of service, they've already broken the contract.
