If these companies are going to use "similar tools...used to protect users... from spam, phishing and viruses" then we are not going to see this solved any time soon. If this press announcement makes anything clear, it is these companies belief that doing something is better than nothing. Clamping down on image traffic won't solve the problem. It will only shift the problem to another medium (mail, video, etc). Perhaps this is good enough for these companies. If they make someone elses problem they can declare victory.

Trying to build a signature database of known child porn images is clearly flawed. This will have great value to those trading images and will be abused.

Building software that can distinguish illegal images is simply intractable in real time. It isn't even good enough for offline use.
