The problem is that since Microsoft will offer products that compete directly with Symantec, research like this can never again be viewed as objective. "Research" like this can end up costing Symantec credibility within the industry.

I'm not defending Microsoft, and the researchers are probably correct, but there is a serious conflict of interest now, and Symantec needs to be very cautious in producing anything like this.
