Although AOL had good intentions, I find their lack of common sense astounding. Especially with the history the company has. You'd think that once having been a leader of online service providers that they would do their best to keep up with concerns of internet users today, especially since they're going nowhere fast.
Perhaps AOL could have considered finding software that can encrypt data and only allow authorized viewers to decrypt the data to view it. Like this:

That way, AOL could have played their part in contributing to research without showing their ignorance to the issues facing their industry.
