The posting over on Boing Boing does NOT conclude that what was done was illegal. As is almost always the case with such rules, in the cited law it is a matter of intent: If the intent was to create and use fraudulent boarding passes the actions were illegal, if the intent was to expose the absurd and ineefective security theater for what it is the actions are not illegal. Ill-advised, maybe, but not illegal.

Of course there may be some other law that doesn't depend on intent that was broken. But no such law has been cited yet.
