I'd wager another factor is the fact that the kids return home from college (as has been the case in my family) and clean up the mess that the parents made over the school year. When mom and pop are complaining the computer is running slow, junior will more than likely re-install windows on the machine (or linux as I did) and buy them time until spring break.
