9 connection attempts per domain and day is neglectable. 93 connection attempts per IP hints at mob spammers(spam bot tries to deliver many emails concurrently to the same mail server). Due to a missing control experiment (e.g. 124 random domain names), the data is totally without value.
In addition bouncing the received messages is extremely unprofessional and causes victims of joe jobbing additional spam problems. The SMTP protocol - most common way to deliver email - provides enough flexibility to conduct this kind of survey without contributing to the spam problem.
I'm not saying that email/domain squatting isn't a problem but this "survey" ...
