Is there a back story, perhaps he provoke them with a "nurr nurr you can't catch me I'm the ginger bread man?".

"Shoot the messenger" sends a message as old as time - we are your adversary, no quarter asked, none given.

Unfortunately if shooting the messenger becomes the norm, then the the threat landscape will shift from hack-n-tell to hack-n-sell.

Good luck mr smarty-pants-authorities when that happens.
