I had a similar experience in a school computer lab. It was a Cisco Networking class and the computers were "locked down" with some software. Out of curiosity, I tried rebooting to console, renaming the folder that I believed the software was living in and booting up again. It worked. I demonstrated the technique to the instructor. She kicked me out of class and said she was going to get me expelled for "hacking." After class, I explained to her that, if I had had malicious intentions, I would never have clued her in on the issue--she settled a bit and dropped the "charges."
