It's not hard to go ask for permission first? And the worst thing that can happen is you're told no. Obviously the other way has worst things that can happen... Read the comment about the "COPS" episode. Puts things into better perspective.
So you're saying that I should get off scott free if I go test a banks security by robbing it, so long as I come back and tell them how you did it..? Why should Information Security be treated any different than bank security? Think about it...

I ?ethically? hack and pen-test for money from time-to-time. And I'm sure as kid I started out with the same mentality as the guy from this article. Not sure when I realized it, but the world is not as safe and trusting as we'd like to think it is... Aw screw it...ANARCHY!
