The young man chose the most embarrassing way to expose his activities - he sent anonymous e-mails to a number of students with their compromised personal info. These students obviously were quite alarmed and concerned. One of the students happened to be working part time at one of the local radio stations.

IMO, the hackers behaviour was unethical. Had he communicated directly with the IT dept with all the technical details with no other leak, I might have given him some leeway. Ultimately, this is something where you asked permission FIRST.

Once it went public, the police had no choice to come down hard - and I wholly agree with their stance
