I'd like to point out, regardless of whether the platform is actively being targeted by malware or not, running some kind of system integrity checking is just good sense. Run anti-virus on OSX, run tripwire on linux, etc... This should be enough common sense by now that you shouldn't have to wait for the manufacturer to tell you. (duh!) This basic point makes the whole debate about Apple recommendations redundant - they _should_ recommend that, but users should know better already.
