This analysis depends on the assumption that the person looking at the drive is not looking for the erasure of a particular file. For instance, suppose I stole a Big Secret, copied to my flash drive then overwrote the file on the hard drive. Owner of Big Secret suspects me and gets my hard drive. A bit of matching will reveal sectors which have unusually high matches with Big Secret even if the probability of an individual bit retaining its state is only slightly better than chance.
