Sophos recommends Macs for security
2006-07-05
The security folks at anti-virus vendor Sophos are making a bold statement, recommending home users purchase Macs to avoid the onslaught of Trojan horses and viruses for Windows based computers.
Sophos' short six-page
threat management report (PDF) was published in July 2006. The overview notes that Sophos found 180,292 different viruses, Trojans, spyware, worms, and other malware in the past year, primarily for Microsoft Windows based computers. The company also notes that Trojan horses now outnumber traditional viruses by four-to-one, approximately double the ratio found just one year ago.
A press release on the company's website states that, "the continued dominance of Windows-based threats has prompted Sophos to suggest that many home users should consider switching to Apple Macs, to shield themselves from the malware onslaught." Apple's Macintosh computers have become increasingly popular since the company switched its architecture over to Intel-based chipsets.
