Netscape Communicator Javascript Bookmark Vulnerability

A vulnerability in Netscape Communicator may allow a rouge web site that can convince a user to bookmark their site access to file in their computer.

Netscape Communicator stores user's bookmarks in an HTML file. If a rouge web site includes Javascript code inside a SCRIPT tag inside a web page's TITLE tag and get the user to bookmark the page, the Javascript will be saved in the user's bookmark file. The next time the bookmark file is opened, either by the user or a server redirect, the Javascript code will be executed in the security context of the local file. Guessing the name of the bookmark and using a redirect is not particularly difficult.

This allows the rouge Javascript to read the user's local file and browse the directories.
