Adobe re-patches Shockwave player
Published: 2009-06-25

Software firm Adobe announced this week that the company had released a patch for a flaw in its Shockwave multimedia player that could have allowed an attacker the ability to remotely exploit a target's system.

In its advisory released on Tuesday, the software firm provided no details of the flaw except that the issue was considered critical and had been fixed in a previous version of the software. To solve the problem, the software maker recommended that users uninstall previous versions of the software and then install the latest version.

"This issue was previously resolved in Shockwave Player 11.0.0.465; the Shockwave Player 11.5.0.600 update resolves a backwards compatibility mode variation of the issue with Shockwave Player 10 content," the company stated.

Earlier this month, Adobe fixed more than a dozen issues in its Reader and Acrobat software. The company has moved to a quarterly patch schedule for those programs, but continues to patch Shockwave and Flash on an ad-hoc basis.

Adobe is not aware of any attacks exploiting the flaw, the company stated in a brief blog post.
