OpenProtect is a server-side email protector which guards against spam and viruses in addition to providing content filtering, using a variety of open- source packages. It supports Sendmail, Postfix, Exim and qmail, and is easy to install and maintain.
Chwinpw is a small command line utility that can securely change passwords on remote windows machines. It can help to enforce a higher degree of security, by periodic password maintenance of vital accounts. Chwinpw can be run from a logon script or from a central location. It is also possible to instruct chwinpw to make bulk changes.
The milter module for Python provides a python interface to Sendmail's libmilter that exploits all its features. Milters can run on the same machine as sendmail, or another machine. The milter can even run with a different operating system or processor than sendmail. Sendmail talks to the milter via a local or internet socket, and keeps the milter informed of events as it processes a mail connection. At any point, the milter can cut the conversation short by telling sendmail to ACCEPT, REJECT, or DISCARD the message. After receiving a complete message from sendmail, the milter can again REJECT or DISCARD it, but it can also ACCEPT it with changes to the headers or body.
Epylog is a log notifier and parser that periodically tails system logs on Unix systems, parses the output in order to present it in an easily readable format (parsing modules currently exist only for Linux), and mails the final report to the administrator. It can run daily or hourly. Epylog is written specifically for large clusters where many systems log to a single loghost using syslog or syslog-ng. Although Epylog can be used on standalone systems, other packages (like logwatch) are probably better suited for such purposes.
monit is a utility for monitoring and managing daemons or similar programs running on a Unix system. It will start specified programs if they are not running and restart programs not responding. It supports a daemon mode (poll programs at a specified interval, and start, stop, and restart programs), logging (syslog or your own logfile), configuration (with a comprehensive controlfile) runtime and TCP/IP port checking, process status, and timeout and alert notification. It provides an HTTP interface.
CRM114 is a Controllable Regex Mutilator and Smart Filter, designed for easy creation of filters for things like incoming mail, system logs, or monitoring processes. Filtering rules can be either hard-coded (such as regexes), soft-coded (calculated at runtime or read from an external file or process), or learned dynamically by phrase matching (by SBPH hashing). This makes it possible to create very accurate filters with very little actual work.
Snort Alert Monitor
SAM is a real-time Snort alert monitor. It provides many ways to indicate that you may be experiencing an intrusion attempt on your network, including audio/visual warnings, email warnings, etc.
The NET-SNMP (formerly UCD-SNMP) package contains various tools relating to the Simple Network Management Protocol including an extensible agent, an SNMP library, tools to request or set information from SNMP agents, tools to generate and handle SNMP traps, a version of the unix 'netstat' command using SNMP and a Tk/perl mib browser. It was originally based on the Carnegie Mellon University SNMP implementation (version 126.96.36.199), but has been greatly enhanced, ported and fixed and barely resembles the original package anymore.
Zabbix is software that monitors your servers and applications. Polling and trapping techniques are both supported. It has a simple, yet very flexible notification mechanism, and a Web interface that allows quick and easy administration. It can be used for logging, monitoring, capacity planning, availability and performance measurement, and providing the latest information to a helpdesk.
GILoT is an interpreting and formatting log tail:er. As it tails a log file, each log entry is matched against rules dictated in the easily customized rules file; if the log is matched, the log message is formatted to output only the requested data. As such, only relevant data is parsed and reading the log entries becomes much easier.
